A regular client came in the other day.
For a while now he has been in relationship with pain that travels from his neck into his shoulder blade. The previous session we spent a lot of time around the neck, shoulder girdle, surrounding soft tissue, and the attachments of the levator scapulae.
When he came back this week he reported that he was sore for about three days afterward. Better, but still there.
Then he said something that made my ears perk up.
โI can feel it going down my arm into my bicep.โ
I love that.
I love when clients can tune inward and describe what they are noticing. Not because they need to get it right, but because the body is always offering clues.
Immediately my mind went to the front of the shoulder and upper arm, specifically the coracobrachialis.
So I followed the thread.
Truthfully, I donโt usually walk into a session with a rigid plan. I listen. I feel things out. I follow what the body seems to be revealing.
This session led me into the chest and ribcage.
The collarbone.
The scapula.
The sternum.
The whole shoulder girdle.
Working to create a little more space and ease around an area that seemed to be asking for attention.
As we moved toward the end of the session, something in me said:
Letโs slow down.
I introduced a few fulcrums.
One supporting the back while containing the heart.
Another connecting the heart and head.
Then, during the closing sequence, I introduced a fulcrum I learned a while back called:
Goddess Opens Her Heart to the Sun.
As I nestled into the position, I found myself sharing something I often think about.
Regardless of gender, we all carry both masculine and feminine qualities within us.
The yin and the yang.
The sun and the moon.
Action and receptivity.
Structure and flow.
We are all affected by the sun.
And we are all affected by the moon.
Her tides.
Her cycles.
Her mystery.
Something about this position always reminds me of that.
The shape of it feels open.
Receptive.
Strong.
Soft.
A heart turned toward the light.
I suppose thatโs why I keep coming back to it.
I donโt know what landed for my client.
I donโt know how his body is shifting or changing after the session.
What I do know is that we started with a sore neck and shoulder.
We followed the bodyโs clues.
And somehow we ended with Goddess Opens Her Heart to the Sun.
Bodies are funny that way.
Part anatomy.
Part mystery.
Iโll be curious to hear what his has to say next time. ๐
